FOR INDEXING BY THE SECOND LETTER DIVISIO [[covered text]]
WHICH GIVES
NEARLY 400 DIVISIONS OF THE ALPHABET.
All names are indexed by the First Two Letters of the Surname, viz; Ada [[covered text]] should be indexed under AD, Brown under BR, Crump under CR, Drake under D [[covered text]] 
Ellis under EL, Knox under KN, McClelland under McC, McGrath under Mc [[covered text]]
Church under CH, Stevens under ST, Twitchell under TW. Wheeler under W [[covered text]] &c., &c.

NOTICE.

Where the Hyphen letter is used, viz; AE-K, EW-Z, or in fact, in any p [[covered text]]
in the Index, proper space is allowed under the same, for all names occurring un [[covered text]]
the [[italics]] intermediate combinations, [[/italics]] and such names should be indexed in [[italics]] this space. [[/italics]]
Hyphen letter is seldom used, only in cases where names are not frequent.
Proper space is allowed for all names in use.

BY THE THIRD LETTER DIVISO [[covered text]]
WHICH GIVES
NEARLY 4,000 DIVISIONS OF THE ALPHABET.
All names are indexed by the First Three Letters of the Surname, viz; [[covered text]] should be indexed under ABB, Barnes under BAR, Smith under SMI, &c. Proper spacing is allowed for all names under every combination, and where the Hy [[covered text]] letter appears, viz; BAA-K, &c., &c., all names occurring under the [[italics]] interm [[/italics]] [[covered text]] combinations and including the hyphen letter are to be indexed in the space all [[covered text]] BAA-BAK, proper space being allowed for the same, which rule should be fol [[covered text]] throughout the book. The Hyphen letter is used in cases where names a [[covered text]] frequent. 
Follow the above rule, and the spacing allowed will fill up evenly for the g [[covered text]] average of names.

MARGINAL NOTICE. 
All letters of the Alphabet are printed in Gold on Projecting Tags on the front of the pages. [[covered text]] each Letter are printed the first THREE letters of each name in black ink, which gives the location of a [[covered text]] divided on the third letter.
Open the Index at any letter required. On the front edges of the leaves is seen at a glance th [[covered text]] letters of any name desired.
To find Harris open at the Letter H; on the edge is printed HAR; place the thumb on the [[covered text]] turn the leaf, there you will find all names beginning with H-A-R. To find Hills look further down the [[covered text]] HIL, turn the leaf back and all names beginning with H-I-L will be found.
To find Stevens open the Index at S; on the edge is printed STE, place the thumb on STE and [[covered text]] leaf, and all names under S-T-E will be found on these pages. To find Strong look for STR, and turn [[covered text]] 
Each letter of the Alphabet is arranged on this plan, and is operated in the same way.
