AfriCOBRA Manifestos by Jeff Donaldson and Cherilyn C. Wright

AfriCOBRA (African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists) is an African American artist collective that was founded in 1968, first under the name COBRA (Coalition of Black Revolutionary Artists), in Chicago, Illinois. The founding AfriCOBRA artists were associated with the Black Arts Movement, and the group grew out of discussions on how their art could express a Black aesthetic. The AfriCOBRA philosophy emphasized positive revolutionary ideas and community effort.
Jeff Donaldson was a co-founding life-long member, and kept extensive files on AfriCOBRA’s early years. Here we have some drafts of manifestos by Donaldson and Cherilyn C. Wright, associated with the Ten in Search of a Nation exhibition, from his papers.

Aline Saarinen’s Diary, 1928

Aline Bernstein Saarinen (1914-1972) was an art and architecture critic, author, and television correspondent. She was an editor and critic for Art News and the New York Times, and became Chief of NBC's News Bureau in Paris--the first woman to hold such a position in television. She wrote and edited several books. Saarinen, who grew up in New York City as the daughter of two amateur painters, was already a talented writer at 14, evidenced by her 1928 diary. In the diary, Saarinen writes about her daily life, friendships, and interests, but also includes poetry, short stories, and prose. Saarinen's sunny personality, introspection, and teenage fixation on dances, dating, and boys, are shown through her expressive writing. Help transcribe her diary as part of the Smithsonian's #BecauseOfHerStory campaign to share and celebrate the diverse stories of American girlhood. Coordination of this and other girlhood history projects in the Transcription Center (including selection, digitization, cataloging, outreach, and educational resources) was funded by the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative. Alma Thomas's Scrapbook for Shaw Junior High School Negro History Week, 1930-1940

Negro History Week, a precursor to Black History Month, was established by Carter Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH) in 1925, and first celebrated in February 1926. At Shaw Junior High School in Washington, D.C., painter and art educator Alma Thomas organized student activities as part of the celebrations honoring African American history and culture. Her scrapbook documents the Shaw Art Gallery exhibitions and school assemblies she organized in celebration of Negro History Week from 1930-1940. The scrapbook contains programs for the festivities and photographs of students at work in Thomas's classroom.

Arthur Dove (1880-1946) Draft of a letter to Alfred Stieglitz, May 1933 Arthur and Helen Torr Dove papers, 1905-1975 In 1933, painter Arthur Dove drafted these letters to collector and museum founder Duncan Phillips. Dove drafted this response to Phillip’s proposal to cut the painting, The Bessie of New York, in half. Dove strongly disagreed with the idea but did not want to offend an important patron. Today the painting is still fully intact and in the collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art.

Artists Talk on Art is the art world's longest running and most prolific aesthetic panel discussion series organized by artists for artists. The still-active series is based in New York, New York and held at various locations around SoHo. Help us transcribe the key information on date, event name and participants listed in these promotional flyers which date from the 1970s through 2008.
