Bailey - Colorado, South Dakota, Wyoming, May 1888 - August 1888

About the Project

What was it like to join an unprecedented effort to survey and understand the ecology of the North American continent. Already a skilled naturalist at age 24, Vernon Bailey was an important member of the United States Biological Survey. He kept copious notes of his field work, some in diary form like this journal of his work in 1888. His work started as soon as boarded the train and set out to the Dakota Territory. Join our volunteers to transcribe this personal account of Bailey's daily efforts and learn how 19th century naturalists approached their task.
