Unidentified female sculptor with her work, circa 1940

About the Project

The Archives of American Art's digital collections encompass more than 8,000 individually scanned and described photographs, many of which depict images of artists. Formal portraits, candid snapshots, and group photographs offer a glimpse into the personality, social circle, method of work, or personal life of the subject. Sometimes, even after investigation, mystery still remains. Individuals photographed with artists, if identified, can help to contextualize and give meaning to the image. Join the Archives in an attempt to identify unknown people photographed with artists.
Identify the subjects of these photographs, left to right. Example: John Doe (left), David Smith (second from left), Danielle Smith (right). Use the Notes field to communicate any questions or comments. Check our catalog records for the photographs for additional information.
