Western Union Telegraph Expedition - Reports of Major S. Abasa, February - April 1866

About the Project

An expedition split into three divisions across two continents, searching for a viable telegraph route from North America to Eastern Europe by way of the Bering Sea. While Robert Kennicott, and later William Healey Dall, led the science corps exploring Russian America, Russian nobleman Major Serge Abasa led the Asian division in 1866. A year later, the United States would buy Russian America, now the state of Alaska, for $7.2 million dollars. The expedition was abandoned in 1867 when telegraph cable successfully reached across the Atlantic to England. However, the exploration produced a trove of scientific and ethnographic information. Join us in transcribing Major Abasa's reports from the Kamchatka Peninsula.
