Bailey - Texas, California, and New Mexico, April 1900 - August 1900

About the Project

Have you ever been in a Canadian zone outside of Canada? In 1889, C. Hart Merriam, a division chief of the United States Department of Agriculture, developed the concept of "life zones" to classify distinct communities of plants and animals that share a similar physical climate. Vernon Bailey records traveling in and out of the Canadian zone during his field work in southern New Mexico and eastern California in the spring and summer of 1900. Join our volunteers to transcribe Bailey's field journal and see these "life zones" through his eyes.
