Western Union Telegraph Expedition - Reports of Frank E. Ketcham, 1866 - 1867

About the Project

When exploring the rivers, bays and land of western Alaska, who do you turn to for assistance? As part of the Western Union Telegraph Expedition’s Science Corps, Frank Ketchum and his crew learned that relationships are everything. From the natives who called the area home, to their fellow travelers with the Russian Fur Company, they had to rely on others to help them make it through the journey. The corps faced multiple delays for various reasons, including their sled dogs who were literally "under the weather." Please help us transcribe these reports to make them more accessible for future researchers. Learn how these new found relationships and alliances and stressed out canines impacted the crew.
