For Dr. Waldo L. Schmitt, the usefulness of photography in field work was a settled question. His papers and field journals are proof of that. This set of slides is part of his field notes from the third Smithsonian Caribbean expedition funded by philanthropist and Smithsonian honorary fellow J. Bruce Bredin in the mid to late 1950's. Written on the edges of the slides' frames are notations that will enhance our understanding of the images' content and how the expedition team expected to them afterwards. Because the writing can be on all four sides and is not always "right-side up," please use the special instructions as your guide while working on these transcriptions.

Smithsonian honorary fellow J. Bruce Bredin and his wife Octavia Mary du Pont sponsored this and other Smithsonian expeditions as part of their interest in strengthening educational organizations. More about the Smithsonian-Bredin expeditions can be found in the Waldo L. Schmitt Papers, 1907-1978 (Record Unit 007231) at the Smithsonian Institution Archives.
