Smithsonian-Bredin Caribbean Expedition, 1956: Diary, March 2 - April 18, 1956

About the Project

Early on, the bulk of the United States National Museums collections of biological specimens in the Caribbean had come from Thomas Gill who had focused on two islands. In 1956, philanthropist J. Bruce Bredin sponsored an expedition to strengthen the Smithsonian's collections for this area of the world and thereby enhance its ability to support more research and deliver more education. Dr. Waldo L. Schmitt led the expedition and contributed this daily diary of the almost six week long effort. Help us to transcribe this material and see what it was like sail the Caribbean in search of knowledge.
