Proceedings of the Board of Regents Meeting held on September 17, 1984

About the Project

In 1982, India's Prime Minister Indira Ghandi brought up the opportunity for a Festival of India to be held in the United States during a visit with President Ronald Reagan. The cultural program envisioned sending artists, craftsmen and art treasures to museums across the United States beginning in 1985. A smaller version had been held in the United Kingdom with notable success. Two years after Prime Minister Ghandi's conversation with President Reagan, the Smithsonian's Secretary Ripley and the Board of Regents considered the question of the Institution's participation in the Festival. Join other volunteers to transcribe these Board of Regents Meeting Minutes to learn more about the avenues they explored and decisions they reached on this and numerous other issues.
