Proceedings of the Board of Regents Meeting held on May 5, 1986

About the Project

With heavy budget cuts in 1986, the Smithsonian was forced to end its summer evening hours. But the alternatives the Board of Regents and Secretary Adams considered were much more drastic. In order to save money, the group discussed closing the museums for a few days each week. Additionally, the possibilities of both paid admissions and having a space for volunteer financial contributions throughout the museums were also considered. At the meeting, leaders tasked an ad hoc committee of Regents to consult with staff on the possible ways in which the Smithsonian could economize. Please assist us transcribing these minutes with a crowd of volunpeers. Learn about the financial stresses Smithsonian’s leadership faced after government spending was limited in 1986. And fear not! Some Smithsonian museums continue to offer special summer hours.
