These journal pages are believed to be a fragment of John Colton Sumner's original notes. recorded July 5- August 31, 1869 during his time on the John Wesley Powell geographic expedition of 1869 to the Grand Canyon. The pages, now held in the National Anthropological Archives, were found within John Wesley Powell's own journals from the expedition (also held within the NAA- Manuscript 1795ab). Included is a typed copy made from handwritten copy believed to have been made by Sumner from his original notes. Also included is a 1 page typed letter between Stanton and Robert Brewster to William H. Holmes, Washington, D. C. New York City, March 23, 1907, which acknowledges receipt of the copy of Sumner's journal, recognized as being in Sumner's hand and signed by him.
