About the Project

Madam C.J. Walker’s company created schools and training opportunities for thousands of African American women across the country. This 1940 “Text Book of the Madam C. J. Walker Schools of Beauty Culture” was used to train Walker’s students in biology, chemistry, scalp diseases, treatments, and cutting and styling techniques related to hair care.
