Broadside for an auction of enslaved persons at the Charleston courthouse

The history of enslaved persons is often difficult to uncover. Broadsides are one of the helpful sources that provide us with clues about individuals and their history. This broadside advertises a court-ordered auction of slaves from the case “Sanders vs. Sanders.” The auction took place in 1859 outside the courthouse in Charleston, South Carolina. Over 50 names of men, woman, and children are listed with their age and annotated notes about their health or final sales.
