Certificate of Freedom for Joseph Trammell

About the Project

Joseph Trammell was born enslaved in 1831. It is unclear whether Mr. Trammell was given his freedom at the age of twenty-one or if the 1852 certificate was provided based on a renewal of his registration as a free person of color. In Virginia, free people of color were required to register with the state in order to prove their free status. In addition, they were required to renew their registration every two years. Help us transcribe Trammell’s Certificate of Freedom.
