Advertisement card for the "Great Negro Mart" in Memphis, Tennessee

About the Project

Hill, Ware, and Chrisp was a slave trading firm who operated the "Great Negro Mart," at 87 Adams Street in Memphis, Tennessee. The firm was owned and operated by Byrd Hill, John D. Ware, and John W. Chrisp. The Great Negro Mart was an extremely successful slave trading business and sold over one thousand enslaved persons each year. During the 1850s, much of Memphis’ wealth was due to slave-grown cotton; otherwise it was derived directly from the slave trade, with boats arriving daily at the riverfront. Hill took advantage of this environment and his location on Adams Street to advertise to the slavers. Help us transcribe this advertisement and learn about the economics of the institution of slavery.
