This letter, dated March 5, 1800, was written by David Selden to his parents in Chatham, Connecticut, from Charleston, South Carolina. In the letter, Selden lists several cities he has recently traveled to including New York and Philadelphia, with future destinations including Georgetown and Georgia. He visited Gadsden’s Wharf in Charleston where he describes the horrors of the slave trade. The wharf was the primary disembarkation point for over 100,000 enslaved Africans brought to the Americas.
