1881 was the final year of Edward W. Nelson's four year assignment as a weather observer attached to the Signal Corps of the United States Army in Alaska. This was also the year the United States National Museum opened its doors under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution. Smithsonian Secretary Spencer F. Baird had helped to get Nelson, a budding naturalist, the assignment so Nelson could utilize his free time to study the flora and fauna of northwestern Alaska, purchased by the United States just a decade before. Team up with digital volunteers to transcribe Nelson's private journal beginning in the late spring of 1881.
