Edward W. Nelson - Alaska, August 12 - September 7, 1881

When you have a lot you want to remember, a journal can fill up quickly! Naturalist Edward W. Nelson filled this 100-page field book journal in under three weeks while stationed near the Bering Strait in Alaska. The year 1881 was the last of his four-year posting as a weather observer for the United States Army. One can tell from his detailed notes, he was a keen observer and contributed much to the understanding of Alaska's flora and fauna. Thousands of the specimens he collected were sent to the Smithsonian to serve the research community.
