Doris Holmes Blake - Correspondence with Helena "Lena" G. Fowler, 1918-1930

About the Project

If you’ve been transcribing the Doris Holmes Blake Papers, you might already know a little (or a lot) about the Smithsonian entomologist’s daughter, Doris Sidney Blake. But did you know she also had a son who died in infancy? In this project, we get a rare glimpse into Doris Holmes Blake’s pregnancies through correspondence between her close family friend, Lena G. Fowler, and her mother, Lucy Wentworth Holmes. Fowler wrote: “I am glad that Doris did not have a hard time when the baby came. Last time we thought that she had been living rightly to have nature treat her so kindly.” Join a group of volunpeers in helping to make this project, which sheds light on the life of a young woman between 1919 and 1930, more accessible to researchers.
