This correspondence from the Doris Holmes Blake Papers includes months and days of the week, but were likely grouped together because they are not dated with the year. In correspondence between Lena G. Fowler and Lucy Wentworth Holmes, we get small glimpses into the life of Smithsonian entomologist Doris Holmes Blake, whom Fowler, a family friend, said had “spunk.” Of Blake, Fowler wrote: “I can’t help marveling at the amount of work she gets done, when I do so little in the course of a day.” Why was Blake working so hard during this period? What was she working on? By transcribing these letters, volunpeers will help us get a better sense of Blake’s work-life balance and the experience of a Smithsonian woman scientist in the first half of the twentieth century.
