Leonhard Stejneger - Vol. III, Middle Kurel, 1896

About the Project

At the westernmost end of the Aleutian Islands archipelago, the Commander Islands are known for a rich diversity of marine mammals and sea birds, many of which are now listed on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species. The work of naturalists, zoologists and many others in the second half of the nineteenth century built a body of knowledge about this special area that led to a formal agreement between countries on both sides of the ocean to protect fur seals in 1911. Three decades earlier zoologist Leonhard Stejneger (1851-1943) went to the Islands to establish observation stations. Because of his expertise, President Grover Cleveland appointed Stejneger to the International Fur-Seal Commission in 1896. Team up with your fellow volunteers and help us transcribe this field journal from his first year with the Commission.
