This form records the successful claim against the Confederate state of South Carolina for the death of an impressed enslaved man named Dick. Dick died on October 26, 1862, from dysentery after working for a month on the military fortifications being constructed near Charleston, South Carolina, by the Confederate Government. Samuel Jordan, who enslaved Dick, was rewarded $750.00 by the government. The document is signed by James Tupper, the Auditor of South Carolina. Many of the details of Dick’s life are absent from the report, but it does shed light on the lives of African Americans who were forced to work for the Confederacy. It also shows the process through which slaveholders could be compensated for the loss of an enslaved African American. The State Auditor created a form for documenting the deaths of enslaved men and women, which speaks to the horrific working conditions enslaved men and women endured.
