Bill of Sale for Chloe from Z. B. Oakes to Elias N. Ball

About the Project

The history of enslaved persons is often difficult to uncover. Printed material provides us with clues about individuals and their history. This bill details the sale of a young woman named Chloe by Z.B. Oakes to Elias N. Ball on October 25, 1862. The Ball family members held at least 842 slaves on 8 plantations at the start of the Civil War. Oakes was a leading slave broker and auctioneer in Charleston, South Carolina, and was quite active in the domestic slave trade in the 1850's. Help us transcribe this bill and learn more about the domestic slave trade even after the outbreak of the Civil War and Chloe’s story.
