Bill of sale for four enslaved persons in Charleston, South Carolina

About the Project

The history of enslaved persons is often difficult to uncover. Printed material provides us with clues about individuals and their history. This bill is for the sale of four enslaved persons by George Lynes to Master of Equity, James W. Gray against the price of $660 for mortgage. George Lynes was a Baptist minister and owned a plantation in South Carolina. Help us transcribe this bill of sale and shed light on the stories of not just the institution of slavery, but the individual men, women, and children who helped shape America.
