Doris Holmes Blake - Correspondence with Lucy Wentworth Holmes, January - October 1948

About the Project

While perusing the contents of this project featuring correspondence between Doris Holmes Blake and her mother, Lucy Wentworth Holmes, you might be struck by Lucy's narration of her experience casting an absentee ballot in the 1948 United States presidential election. While today, US citizens vote absentee by mail, Lucy had a voting official come to her home and record her choice for president. Lucy's matter-of-fact recounting of her vote belies the truth that only three decades previously, she would not have been able to cast a ballot in any election. See more of Lucy's own story as you dive in to her letters with your fellow volunpeers!
