Edward William Nelson - Louisiana, February - March 1928, Volume 2

About the Project

The field notebooks of Smithsonian collecting scientists are always fascinating. This isn't just because of the landmark content they often contain, but also because of their value as artifacts. Each notebook, like this one of Edward Nelson's from a 1928 trip to Louisiana, carries the story of its manufacture and use. This notebook's pages bear deep impressions from Nelson's pencil. He must have written with a fair amount of force, and these pages are made from relatively cheap and therefore weak paper—which only serves to emphasize the pencil's grooves! This will make transcription more challenging because of the way the light reflects of the dimpled surfaces, but you, our loyal volunpeers, are up to the task!
