About the Project

Edward Nelson's career spanned decades and an entire continent, ranging from his stint with the US Army Signal Corps in 1870s Alaska, to his decade crisscrossing Mexico, to his occasional quick trips to various US state in his later years with the Bureau of Biological Survey. This notebook contains notes on photographs taken during some of those expeditions—covering almost 40 years of his work and life. Each page recalls a different excursion, a different location, and a different body of observed flora and fauna.
