Elaine M. Kilbourne Scrapbook 3, 1966-1967

About the Project

Award-winning chemistry educator Elaine M. Kilbourne (1923- 2014) compiled several scrapbooks documenting her long and distinguished teaching career. Affectionately called Killer Kilbourne by students for her keen knowledge of chemistry and passion for encouraging excellence in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education, Ms. Kilbourne taught chemistry at Anacostia High School in Washington, DC for twenty years. She was the first teacher in Washington, DC to teach on the subject of nuclear energy, and was credited by several former students as having motivated them to pursue scientific careers. Kilbourne also wrote ten science projects which were published by the Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The American Chemical Society recognized her contribution to the STEM field with numerous awards, including the Second District James Bryant Conan Award in High School Chemistry Teaching. Elaine M. Kilbourne scrapbooks were disassembled and rehoused in acid-free folders for long-term preservation. Funding for the digitization of Kilbourne scrapbooks and their inclusion into the Transcription Center was provided by the Smithsonian Women’s Committee.
