Doris Holmes Blake - Correspondence with Doris S. Blake Ullman, January 1971 - March 1972

About the Project

"[Content Warning: mental health disorders, allusions to recreational drug use, racial stereotypes.] Doris Ullman, daughter of Doris Holmes Blake, has been the recipient of much of her mother's correspondence in the last several Transcription Center projects from the Smithsonian Institution Archives. Against the backdrop of the looming energy crisis of the 1970s and the continued struggle for equality in the Civil Rights era, Doris navigates her own personal difficulties—emotional resilience in the face of mental health challenges and hospitalization, interpersonal relationships with her mother and ex-husband, and the day-to-day difficulties of providing for oneself in the chaotic whirl of New York City. Join your fellow volunpeers in helping bring greater compassion and understanding to Doris Ullman's life.
