About the Project

Ever wonder what advertisements piqued the interests of early 20th century American farmers? In 1915, the magazine Successful Farming announced a letter-writing contest asking the public to answer the question, “Which seed, tree, or plant advertisement in the March issue of Successful Farming contains the best offer and the most valuable information?” Over 100 farmers and gardeners from across the country wrote in and described why the W. Atlee Burpee & Co.’s seed advertisement appealed to them the most.
