Hewitt Sisters' Travel Diary - United States Volume 4

About the Project

Travel right along-side two intrepid women founders of what became the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum through their diary entries! Sarah (1859-1930) and Eleanor (1864-1924) Hewitt, also known as “Sallie” and “Nellie”, were two unattached, wealthy, New York City sisters, who traveled extensively collecting objects highlighting art and design in the early 20th century. These pioneering women of significant means kept detailed records of their extensive travels throughout Europe in a series of diaries. Following the onset of World War I, the sisters focused on the United States. This diary is volume 4 of their travels in the US, and includes trips from Connecticut to California as early as 1914, with many illustrations of the sights they encountered along the way.
