Who were Holeyas and Coorgs? Where did Toda and Kurumbar tribes live? Do you know details of regions and the caste system from the 1850s and 1860s? Transcribe the eighth volume of "The People of India" to identify the Indian culture groups and occupations in India in the mid-nineteenth century. The multi-volume ethnological study "People of India" is a portal into Indian-British relationships in the mid-nineteenth century; photographs made by British photographers in India and detailed histories of these groups are included in the collection.
The collection documents the caste and culture groups of India for a British India Office multi-volume publication. The final collection was gathered by John Forbes Watson (1827-1892), director of the India Office's India Museum and keeper of the museum from 1867-1879, and John William Kaye (1814-1876) the secretary of the India Office's Political and Secret Department.

Transcribe the final volume to help researchers and others learn about populations and relationships in India in the mid-nineteenth century; this collection can be explored in greater detail via Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery Archives.
