What are the differences between reptiles and amphibians in Norway and Denmark and those in Virginia? Transcribe Leonhard Stejneger's field book with collections made in 1905 to 1906 to find out. Leonhard Stejneger (1851-1943) was an expert herpetologist and ornithologist, with vast zoological knowledge. In addition to work in Europe and Virginia, Stejneger researched in the North Pacific. This kind of work in Europe and North America allowed him to develop great understanding of fauna and correlation of life zones in the two continents. Later, he served as simultaneous Head Curator of the Smithsonian Department of Biology and Curator of the Division of Reptiles and Batrachians from 1911 until his death.
This field book is a specimen list of reptile and amphibian species. Stejneger collected these species lists in Europe between 12 May and 14 July 1905, before surveying in Virginia between 17 July and 26 August 1906. The European locations include sites near Bergen, Norway and various sites in Nysted, Denmark. Stejneger collected from Augusta County, Shenandoah County and other areas within Virginia. This field book is part of the Field Book Project and Registry: a conservation and digitization initiative co-sponsored by the National Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Institution Archives. This field book from 1905-1906 is one of many in the Leonhard Stejneger Papers collection, 1753, 1867-1943, held by the Smithsonian Institution Archives. By transcribing this piece, you'll help researchers learn more about the collection, the Field Book project, and Leonhard Stejneger at the Smithsonian Institution Archives.
