Sandberg, correspondence and notes, 1893

About the Project

How would you respond to John Herman Sandberg if you were asked to review the botanical specimens he generously offered to your museum? This set of letters and lists are correspondence from William M. Canby in 1893 to Sandberg for additional review and a letter to Frederick Coville, then an Honorary Curator of the United States National Herbarium. The included lists contain some references to disagreements in identification along with notes included for some specimens that describe logic used in determining identification. Canby himself was well-regarded in the field by others including Charles Darwin, Asa Gray and Joseph Nelson Rose. Join us in transcribing this correspondence with a collector associated to a complex of grasses sometimes referred to as Sandberg's bluegrass.
