Ira Sayles - Field notebook, 1888, notes from New York

About the Project

What kind of fossil record can you find in New York? By early 1887, United States Geological Survey geologist Charles Walcott had twice delayed studies of Upper Cambrian formations there for lack of staff. That year in March, Ira Sayles became his assistant and was given responsibility to resume the work. By the fall of 1888, Sayles was in New York, making paleontological and geological field notes on the Hamilton Formation. Written in a flipbook, these notes record a wide range of fossils with the location of each numbered and some diagrams of stratigraphy. Please help us transcribe these field notes from a formative time in the study of North American geology.
