In the winter of 1889, special field agent Vernon Orlando Bailey (1864–1942) of the Bureau of Biological Survey, United States Department of Agriculture was observing and collecting mammals, birds and plants in Utah, Arizona and Nevada specimens. This fieldbook contains his notes during January and February of 1889 organized by date and locality, using either the scientific or common names. A count of the amount seen or taken is often included. A year later he was awarded the title Chief Field Naturalist and continued to serve the USDA until his retirement four decades later.

Vernon Orlando Bailey, an American naturalist, is most noted for his work in mammalogy. Employed by the Bureau of Biological Survey, United States Department of Agriculture, he contributed roughly 13,000 specimens including many new species. He collected together with others including C. Hart Merriam and Merriam's sister Florence. He would later marry Florence, an ornithologist. Bailey published 244 monographs and articles during his career with the USDA, and is best known for his biological surveys of Texas, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Oregon.
