Marcel Duchamp letter to Jean Crotti and Suzanne Duchamp

About the Project

In a 1952 letter his brother-in-law Jean Crotti and his sister (and Crotti’s wife) Suzanne, Duchamp indicates that his remarks are intended for Crotti with an arrow connecting “Tu” (or “you”) to his name. In a letter filled with oblique references to his own body of work, Duchamp’s inclusion of a purple stamp testifying to the “telegraphic” style of the writing itself, for correspondence that is “running late,” provides a nod to his iconic work, "The Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelor’s, Even," which Duchamp described as a “delay in glass.”
