Florence M. Bailey – Diary 1874

About the Project

Do you have a lifelong interest? How early did it start? Amateur ornithologist Florence Merriam Bailey (1863-1948) grew up to achieve major milestones and leave behind an important legacy when she died in 1948. She devoted her life to the study and protection of birds, forming Audubon Societies in Boston and Washington, D.C. She authored over ten books, several field guides and close to one hundred articles on birds. Parus gambeli baileyae, a kind of California Mountain Chickadee, is named in her honor. And this is her childhood diary. Join us and other digital volunteers in transcribing the daily thoughts of this remarkable eleven-year old!
