Waldo L. Schmitt - Diary 2 of 2 From Palmer Peninsula (Antarctica) Survey, 1962-1963

About the Project

Perhaps you have been to Antarctica? Did you keep a record of your trip? After 50 years studying primarily crustaceans, honorary Smithsonian research associate Waldo LaSalle Schmitt (1887-1977) joined others to survey biodiversity on and around our southernmost continent. This second diary is Schmitt's personal account of his activities and observations working with the Palmer Peninsula Survey in Antarctica. Easy to read, it includes species observed, weather and location data, hand drawn maps, notes about other participants and drafts of correspondence to his wife and others. Help us transcribe the rest of Schmitt's account of the Survey.
