About the Project
These drawings of bird heads are part of ornithologist Robert Ridgway's (1850 - 1929) pioneering work developing in color standards and systematic nomenclature with which to describes bird species at the turn of the twentieth century. A new systematic approach was needed by the mid-19th century in order to handle the the volume of species being discovered. Ridgway's color studies and approach for naming species has gone on to influence zoology both in North America and internationally.
