Bird Head Drawings, Box 35

About the Project

How can a hand-drawn image capture the tiny details of a meadowlark's feathering? Robert Ridgway's steady hand and eye for detail were essential. These are drawings from this ornithologist's personal papers. Mentored by Spencer Fullerton Baird, Ridgway's color studies and systematic approach for naming species and coloring have influenced zoology in North America and internationally. Help us transcribe the annotations on the drawings in this box using the special instructions under READ MORE.
