Brumbaugh's Collection: Correspondence, US Capitol - 1837-1853

About the Project

This series of letters references the building and renovation of the United States Capitol Building; help us transcribe the correspondence from architects who worked on the project. One of the contracts orders iron beams for use in extending the Capitol building in 1857, during the second remodeling. The catalog record for this group of letters may help with names and context as you transcribe and review. From his youth, Thomas Brumbaugh (1921-2011) collected autographed correspondence. Mr. Brumbaugh?s collecting instincts resulted in a unique collaborative collection. The letters in his collection provide a glimpse into the lives of a variety of 19th and 20th century American artists, including Abbott Thayer. Brumbaugh was a professor of fine arts at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, and author of many articles on American art and artists.
