This project comprises letters written by artist Abbott Handerson Thayer. You may recall his
famous works - as well as the
diary of his daughter Mary. While you transcribe and review, you may want to consult the
catalog record for this group of letters - best for additional context and may help with names.
This set of letters was collected by Thomas Brumbaugh (1921-2011), part of his academic research and part of a wider set of autographed correspondence. Mr. Brumbaugh's collecting instincts resulted in a unique collaborative collection. The letters in his collection provide a glimpse into the lives of a variety of 19th and 20th century American artists, including Thayer. Brumbaugh was a professor of fine arts at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, and author of many articles on American art and artists.
