Brumbaugh's Collection: Undated Photographs

About the Project

This project holds the likenesses of artists Gray and Jones. Henry Peters Gray was an American portrait and history painter during the 19th century. Thomas D. Jones was a sculptor and medallionist who worked primarily in marble, along with some works in bronze and wood. While you transcribe and review, you may want to consult the catalog record for more context of these images. This set of letters was collected by Thomas Brumbaugh (1921-2011), part of his academic research and part of a wider set of autographed correspondence. Mr. Brumbaugh?s collecting instincts resulted in a unique collaborative collection. The letters in his collection provide a glimpse into the lives of a variety of 19th and 20th century American artists, including Thayer. Brumbaugh was a professor of fine arts at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, and author of many articles on American art and artists. While you transcribe and review, you may want to consult the catalog record for this group of letters - best for additional context and may help with names.
