William Healey Dall - Notebook, Alaska, 1872

About the Project

If you were on an expedition to Alaska, what are some environmental challenges that you might expect to encounter? For naturalist and US National Museum curator William Healey Dall, the major obstacle was dealing with--and traveling through--the ice. The expedition's issues with the icy Alaskan waters are described throughout Dall's notebook from the United States Coastal Survey of Alaska, 1872. During Dall's journey through the recently purchased Alaskan territory (bought from Russia by the US in 1867), he takes notes about temperature, bearings, pressure, and weather--along with details on the daily icy obstacles (including one instance where a bridge was "carried away by the ice."). Set sail for an icy adventure and help transcribe Dall's notebook!
