TRANSCRIBING TABLES WITH MARKDOWN
Markdown Table Instructions:
Tables can be created by assembling dividing words with hyphens - (at least three and between the first group of text and the next), and separating each column with a pipe |
| First Header | Second Header |
| ------------- | ------------- |
| Content Cell | Content Cell |
| Content Cell | Content Cell |
*Note that the dashes at the top don't need to match the length of the header text exactly:
| Name | Description |
| ------------- | ----------- |
| Joe |Farmer|
| Sue | Cook |
*If the table is just columns without borders you can leave out the outer pipes
Column 1 | Column 2
------------- | -------
Joe | Farmer
Sue | Cook
To style the table here are additional tips:
Including colons (:) within the header row defines the text alignment:
Left-aligned: |:-----------|
Right-aligned: |-----------:|
Center-aligned: |:----------:|
Transcribing Numbers in Tables
While transcribing and reviewing almanac tables, you may see numbers on their side. Please transcribe these as though they were upright with standard numerals: 1, 2, 3, etc.
This 1793 edition of Benjamin Banneker's Almanack and Ephemeris features an annual calendar, statistical information, phases of the moon, astronomical data, and tide tables. Banneker's almanacs were unique because they featured social commentary and politically oriented literature. Some writings from this almanac include "A Plan of a Peace-Office, for the United States," "Extracts from the Debates in the Last Session of the British Parliament, Apr. 1792," "Extract from Jefferson's Notes on Virginia," and "Extract from Wilkinson's Appeal to England on Behalf of the Abused Africans." Please click "READ MORE" below for instructions for transcribing the tables in the almanac.
