William Healey Dall - Diary, 1873-1874

About the Project

Did you know that the United States Coast Survey is one of the oldest US scientific organizations? It was established in 1807 by President Thomas Jefferson, to survey the new nation's coasts and create nautical charts. The agency's work quickly expanded throughout the mid-to-late 1870s, during which time naturalist and US National Museum Curator William Healey Dall set off to explore Alaska. Dall's diary details his work with the US Coast Survey in Alaska. In addition to details about the weather and nautical calculations, Dall includes descriptions of the native fish populations and other wildlife. Explore Alaska's coasts with Dall and help other volunteers transcribe his expedition diary!
