Waldo Schmitt - Correspondence, USBF Halibut Survey, 1914

About the Project

Say you wanted to know how many of a certain species of fish were native to the waters of Washington and Oregon--how might you figure that out? That question was at the heart of naturalist Waldo Schmitt's preparation for the United States Bureau of Fisheries Halibut Survey of 1914. This collection of Schmitt's expedition correspondence gives insight into the planning for the trip, some of the survey's findings, and interviews conducted with Washington and Oregon residents. This survey was conducted at the end of Schmitt's career with the USBF--in 1915 he began working for the Smithsonian, as an Assistant Curator at the US National Museum. Learn more about the USBF Halibut Survey and help transcribe some of the expedition's important findings!
