Motherwell's essay was written on the occasion of Cornell's first solo museum exhibition, held at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, July 12-August 30, 1953. The catalog and essay did not appear, due to lack of funds. The essay was finally published in the 1976 exhibition catalog Joseph Cornell Portfolio Catalogue (New York and Los Angeles: Leo Castelli Gallery, Richard L. Feigen & Co., and James Corcoran Gallery, 1976).
